It was with deep sadness that I learned of Dr. Bethlen’s death. He was my teacher, mentor and friend, first as a student at Plattsburgh and then for many years as I pursued a career as an economist and professor. I was close with Mrs. Bethlen as well.
He was extraordinarily generous with his time—not merely in teaching but in the extracurricular activities of students. Through those efforts he and Mrs. Bethlen touched many lives with their courage, kindness of hearts and personal example.
I often say, Plattsburgh educates its student quite well, but more importantly, it teaches men and women how to live productive, full lives and enhance their communities. Faculty like Dr. Bethlen are the reason for this wonderful contribution to New York and America.
I personally owe a great deal to the Bethlens, and after 40 years still quote Dr. Bethlen to my students and children. I am hardly alone in my debt.
If God ever put a better men or women on this earth, I am yet to meet them.
